Devon Modell hopes to translate his British GT good fortune into podium finishes in Rounds 7 and 8 of the 2014 Courier Connections Renault UK Clio Cup at Oulton Park this weekend (7-8 June).
Following a five-week break, Britain’s premier one-make saloon car championship bursts back into life on Cheshire’s narrow and undulating Oulton Park circuit this weekend (7-8 June).
Rather than taking a break, Maidstone’s Modell has been busy notching up podium finishes in the prestigious Avon Tyres British GT Championship, racing his TF Sport-run Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT4 to third place in last weekend’s ‘Silverstone 500’ following a series of close on-track tussles.
The 23-year old has proven to be a master of adaption, as he’s seemingly able to pull-off stunning results on unfamiliar territory.
On his first outing at Hampshire’s high-speed Thruxton circuit in Rounds 5 and 6 of the UK Clio Cup, he gave himself a significant confidence boost when he finished in an impressive sixth place.
That was backed up by his recent podium on his maiden run on Silverstone’s Grand Prix circuit and, having already scaled the top step of the winners’ rostrum at Oulton Park’s British GT curtain-raiser in April, Modell is right to be confident of replicating that success in Clio Cup machinery this weekend (7-8 June).
“I raced at Oulton Park in last year’s UK Clio Cup, but on the shorted Island circuit,” said Modell. “This year, we’re on the extended International layout and, while I’ve raced and won on that track in British GT, it’s still going to be a significant learning curve in the Clio Cup car due to the speed differential and the car’s front-wheel-drive characteristics.”
“The aim remains the same – to stand on the podium and leave the weekend with as many points as possible. I need to improve on my qualifying form as I feel my race pace is strong but my results are compromised by a relatively poor starting position. I know there’s a lot of work to do, but I’m hopeful that the weekend will go as well as my British GT outing at the circuit.”
Qualifying for Rounds 7 and 8 of the Courier Connections Renault UK Clio Cup is scheduled to begin at 11.25 on Saturday (7 June), while the first of two races will follow at 16.35.
The weekend’s final race (Round 8) will get underway at 13.32 on Sunday (8 June) and will be shown live and in high definition on ITV4 and ITV4HD.
