Dubbed as something of a win or bust weekend, following the forced withdrawal from the previous round of the Formula Masters China Series due to illness, Aidan Read bounced back with a dominant victory today (September 2, 2016) at Eurasia Motorsport’s home circuit of Sepang, Malaysia.
Aidan qualified on pole position ahead of title rival Philip Hamprecht and duly lined up at the head of the field on wet weather rubber. The start saw Aidan drop to fourth position but was quickly able to pick his way through to battle with Hamprecht and Kim Jeong Tae.
As driver coach Oliver Gavin, present again this weekend in Malaysia, surmised, it was almost “too easy” for Aidan as he cleared his rivals one by one to take the lead, set the fastest lap of the race and pull an advantage at the front of the field before taking the victory.
“It was a big win for us today, an important one for me too,” Aidan said. “It was tricky in the wet and then drying conditions, but I felt confident with the car. So credit to Eurasia Motorsport and tomorrow I’ll be pushing for more!”
Aidan starts on pole position and third for tomorrow’s (Sunday 3 September) two remaining races – courtesy of his fastest lap today and time recorded in official qualifying on Friday – as he aims to make it three from three in the fifth round of the championship.
