Championship leader Aidan Wright says this weekend’s title-deciding round of the 2013 Formula Masters China Series (FMCS) on the Shanghai International Circuit will be a stern test of his character (25-27 October).
Wright, backed by SLY Collective – an original men’s underwear brand that embodies the edgy Gold Coast lifestyle – extended his points advantage at the top of the FMCS standings with a brace of podium finishes and a fourth place on Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit in September.
The Cairns-domiciled racer holds a slender ten-point lead over Meritus GP team-mate Afiq Yazid and so the fight for the inaugual Formula Masters China title goes down to the wire in Shanghai this weekend (25-27 October).
Despite there being countless points permutations and variables to consider, 18-year old Wright is in a relaxed frame of mind.
Race wins are on the young Aussie’s agenda, although he acknowledges that a more conservative approach may pay dividends in a weekend that is sure to test his mettle.
“I will try to put into practice everything I’ve learnt this season and make it all work at this critical juncture,” said Wright. “It will be a great event but it’s really going to test my character to the max. I’m not looking to do anything silly at this point. I just need to qualify well and race for the win, which sounds easier that it actually is. Theoretically, if I win the first race I could just finish second to my rivals in the final two but, at the same time, I need to make sure I finish.
“I always expected my team-mate Afiq (Yazid) and I to be the ones to beat. From day one we have both showed great speed and consistency in the Formula Masters China Series, which has provided a very professional and well managed arena to compete in. The Shanghai International Circuit is pretty challenging – because it’s so fast and flowing you really get punished for even the smallest of errors. Whatever happens this weekend, it will have been a great season!”
