The Cairns-domiciled Aidan Wright is eager to showcase his talents on home soil when he makes a guest appearance in the Formula 3 Australian Drivers’ Championship at Phillip Island Circuit, Victoria (20-22 September).
Wright, backed by SLY Collective – an original Australian men’s underwear brand that embodies the edgy Gold Coast lifestyle – is a full-time campaigner in the Formula Masters China Series (FMCS).
With ten podium finishes – including five race wins – to his name, the 18-year old hotshot leads the FMCS championship standings with three races remaining at China’s Shanghai International Circuit, plus the end of season invitational at the Macau Grand Prix, and is on course to seal the title on his first attempt.
Having made a mark in the Asian motorsport scene, Wright is keen to demonstrate his natural aptitude behind the wheel of a racing car in his native Australia and will get his opportunity when he joins the Melbourne-based Harvest Motorsport team for the penultimate round of the Australian F3 Championship at Phillip Island.
Australia’s premier open-wheeled championship makes its traditional September visit to Australia’s quickest circuit – Phillip Island – before taking to the streets of Melbourne at Sandown Raceway for the highly-anticipated 2013 season finale (15-17 November).
The 4.45km circuit, located on Phillip Island in the state of Victoria, was treated to a $3million facelift in December 2012 and is set to be even faster with a fresh layer of asphalt.
While Wright faces a steep learning curve this weekend, he’s relishing the challenge of mastering F3 machinery on such a high-speed track, in front of a passionate Australian crowd.
“Philip Island will be quite an exciting event and I’m really looking forward to it,” said an enthused Wright. “I expect the competition to be quite fierce there, as it is a major testing venue for all Australian drivers, although I’m hoping to showcase my own ability and demonstrate that anyone racing at the top level in Asia can race at the top anywhere.
“It will be great to finally race on home soil, especially in an F3 car. The calibre of drivers in Australian F3 is really high and some have years of experience, so I will do my best to try and learn the ropes as quickly as possible and then move from there. I do expect to be quick.”
With a world of opportunities open to him, Wright is already looking towards the next phase of his motorsport career and his Australian F3 outing will be ideal for assessing his options for the 2014 season and beyond.
He continued: “It will be great to promote my racing in Australia and for some of my Aussie counterparts to watch me doing what I love. We are yet to decide what we’re going to do in 2014 and, as this season nears its conclusion it’s time to start assessing all possible options. Aussie F3 might be the way to go. I guess we will see after the weekend.”
