Teamwork Motorsport confirms that Hong Kong’s Sunny Wong will return to the SINOPEC LUBRICANTS China Touring Car Championship (CTCC) and embark on a partial TCR Asia Series campaign in 2016.
Wong scored pole positions, won the season finale and finished fourth in the CTCC’s headlining 2.0T class in 2015, but, prior to the CTCC, he successfully raced under the Teamwork Motorsport banner in other championships such as the TCSA and the Macau Grand Prix, notably winning the Hong Kong Touring Car Championship Group N title in 2012.
In 2016, Wong will once again take charge of a Teamwork Motorsport-prepared Citroen C Elysee 2.0T against a larger and more competitive grid and Wong said: “I am more than happy to be returning to the China Touring Car Championship with Teamwork Motorsport. This will be my third year in the CTCC and, while we’ve had some ups and downs over the past two seasons, I think we have found a good balance and a strong direction. I am very positive that we can push forwards this year, because we have been running, testing and adapting to the 2016 specifications since the end of the 2015 season.”
Teamwork Motorsport Team Principal, Paul Hui, added: “It’s going to be a challenging year, because our rivalries are going to be strong, but I am very confident in our team and drivers. We do have an edge because all major upgrades were done and tested last year. The season-opener will be very crucial for us; we definitely want to score big before our opponents catch their breath.”
Teamwork Motorsport’s ambition and desire to present itself as a truly international outfit has led it to the TCR Asia Series and, as Wong has been a Teamwork driver since 2010, he is believed to be best placed to help the squad grow and develop in this brand new arena.
As a result, Wong will dovetail his CTCC commitments with a part-season in the TCR Asia Series with a newly-developed Teamwork Motorsport Volkswagen Golf GTi TCR, providing him with more seat time and an opportunity to maximise his performances in the run up to the year-ending Macau Grand Prix.
The opening weekend of the SINOPEC LUBRICANTS China Touring Car Championship (CTCC) will take place in Nanjing, China on 21-22 May and Teamwork Motorsport will officially unveil its 2016 driver line-up and livery in a few weeks.
