Teamwork Motorsport drivers Paul Poon, Samson Fung piloted A Suncity RCZ each and brought home a winning trophy from rounds three and four of Macau Touring Car Championship (MTCS). Alex Fung meanwhile finished in –second place in round three and completed a team one-two run under the lead of Paul Poon.
The race weekend started off really well for the Suncity Group fleet with Alex Fung topped the timesheet in free practice session one. Pace and reliability had both improved since the last outing a month ago and the Teamwork trio Paul Poon, Alex Fung, and Samson Fung claimed second, third and fourth in qualifying respectively.
Race one took place in sunny conditions and unfortunately for pole-sitter Filipe Souza, his car had issues that left him stranded on the grid. One the race commenced. Paul, Alex, and Samson ran first to third and maintained their positions comfortably. It looked like a flawless 1-2-3 finish for the Suncity RCZ until the very last lap when an electronic problem hit #36 Samson Fung’s car. Paul and Alex completed their 1-2 finish.
Qualifying for race two also looked promising with Paul Poon first, Alex Fung and Samson Fung in third and fourth. The race started with an intense battle with the Mini Cooper in second, driven by Macanese driver, Leong.
While Paul was defending from the attack of Leong, Alex and Samson tried everything to battle for that position. On lap three an opportunity appeared at turn seven when Leong exited the corner slightly wide, enabling Samson and Alex to take advantage of it, moving up one position to second and third, while Paul Poon continued to lead the race comfortably.
Towards the middle of the race, a puncture caused #63 Alex Fung to spin in one of the fast corners, and he immediately had to pit for fresh rubber, ending his hopes of a podium.
At this point the top three cars were running closely, with Paul and Samson in first and second with Leong right behind. The closing stages however saw Paul’s RCZ gearbox develop a glitch and that made him unable to defend in the drag race onto the main straight. This eventually dropped him from first to third position. Samson held on to his position and took the chequered flag in first with Paul third.
“We have shown much improvement in many aspects this weekend,” Samson Fung said. “Still it wasn’t perfect, but we hope to make it perfect one when it comes to Macau GP!”
“Congratulations to Paul for claiming another driver’s title, and big thanks to all our engineers and mechanics. It’s them who make us heroes.”
After four rounds of racing all three Teamwork drivers scored sufficient points to enter the Macau GP. A double-podium weekend for Paul Poon also put him on top of the rank and crowned the 1.6T Champion.
From now until November’s Macau GP, the team and drivers have various plans to upgrade and test the Sanctity Group RCZ.
