The final round of the Britcar Trophy Championship beckons for Newbridge Motorsport, which will field a sole race-specification Volkswagen Golf for Team BRIT (British Racing Injured Troops) at Hampshire’s ultra-high speed Thruxton circuit (2-3 October).
Team BRIT, a branch of Kartforce, gives injured ex-military personnel the opportunity to step up from Karts to team endurance competition and is in only its first season of car racing.
The squad of injured troops is on a road that will hopefully lead to an entry in the world’s greatest motor race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and it has dovetailed campaigns in the Endurance Racing Series (ERS) and the MSA British Dunlop Endurance Championship in 2015, when its drivers’ innate determination and resilience has come to the fore.
With the support of Newbridge Motorsport, Team BRIT has featured regularly on the podium in both championships and reaching the top step of the podium in the weeked’s two 45-minute races is the ambition for its one-off appearance in the Britcar Trophy Championship finale at Thruxton, when new hand controls – developed by Shiftec, which specialises in high-end motorsport components , gearing and clutches for GP2 and GP3 – will be introduced.
Newbridge Motorsport Team Principal, Richard Tovey, said: “We have Team BRIT in the Volkswagen Golf once again, but this time in the Britcar Trophy Series. The car has now had a new engine and gearbox installed and we also had new hand controls designed by Shiftec. The old system was a road car adaption and wasn’t designed to work under the extreme conditions of motorsport, but these new controls will be up to the task and should provide a vast improvement in reliability. We’re unquestionably targeting race wins, because I’m sure the hard work that has been put in to the car over the last few weeks will pay dividends.”
Newbridge Motorsport is excited about the prospect of welcoming new drivers to the fold as the team takes its next step on the road to Le Mans, with LMP3 seats still available and the possibility of fielding a two-car assault on the 2016 European Le Mans Series (ELMS).
