The final round of the 2015 Britcar Trophy Championship on the super-fast Thruxton circuit (2-3 October) yielded more glory for Newbridge Motorsport, which extended its unbroken run of podiums with Team BRIT (British Racing Injured Troops).
The Milton Keynes-based outfit is assisting Team BRIT on its road to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and once again fielded a sole Volkswagen Golf racer with newly-developed Shiftec hand controls for the team of ex-military personnel in the concluding instalment of the 2015 Britcar Trophy in Hampshire.
With the highest average speed of any circuit on the calendar, Thruxton can be a formidable and intimidating track and this was duly noted by Team BRIT’s drivers, who had a tentative start to the weekend, but gradually found more speed as their confidence grew on fresh tyres and brakes in qualifying.
The Andover-based venue traditionally provides some of the most spectacular action of the year and this was true of the two 45-minute Britcar Trophy races on Saturday (3 October), when the Newbridge Motorsport-supported Team BRIT drivers locked horns with a rival in a high-powered Audi R8.
The battle raged on for the duration of the opening encounter and was resumed in the day’s second and final race, in which Team BRIT executed a brave overtaking manoeuvre on the climb from the intimidating Church corner, into the final chicane.
In clean air and with their brand new race-tuned hand controls working perfectly, Team BRIT was able to pump in respectable lap times to finish on the winners’ rostrum and extend Newbridge Motorsport’s 100 per cent finishing record in all events contested in 2015.
“It was a slow start to the weekend, but Thruxton is a difficult circuit to master, simply because you need a great deal of confidence to deal with its high average speeds,” said Newbridge Motorsport Director, Richard Tovey. “Nevertheless, progress was made and, come the first race, the Team BRIT guys were on the pace and battling with more powerful machinery. All of the modifications to the Volkswagen Golf’s engine and gearbox, as well as the hand controls, ran faultlessly for the entire event and we were subsequently able to extend our 100 per cent podium run in all events we’ve contested in 2015. This year has exceeded all expectations and I think that’s primarily down to our philosophy of making sure our cars are prepared properly.”
Newbridge Motorsport is excited about the prospect of welcoming new drivers to the fold as the team takes its next step on the road to Le Mans, with LMP3 seats still available and the possibility of fielding a two-car assault on the 2016 European Le Mans Series (ELMS).
